5 Reasons You Are Struggling with Mood Management

There are many natural ways to manage your mood. A big one is through diet. By increasing your intake of whole foods and when able, buying organic and/or non-GMO whole foods, and limiting processed foods. Getting your vitamins, minerals and omega 3s are very important.

Also, food intolerances are on the rise. Whether you have a food allergy or intolerance it can greatly affect your mood. I have a gluten intolerance and when I’ve accidentally eaten it I can tell. I’m down and depressed for a couple of days and my patience is on the thin side.

Moderate weekly exercise, as little as 3 times per week, has been shown to reduce depression and improve sleep. So, get moving. Find something that you enjoy doing. Don’t do something you dread. You’ll never stick with it. For example, if you love walking or biking, find new places to do this! Change it up!

Imbalanced hormones may also play a role in your mood for both women and men. Geranium or Thyme essential oil applied (diluted) over the liver and/or kidneys can help promote generation of natural progesterone. Geranium and Frankincense essential oils have been shown to balance the endocrine system. And when applied to the abdomen Clary Sage, Basil, Coriander and Lavender essential oils provide low dosages of phytoestrogens.

Why use essential oils for mood management? Aromatherapy has long been known to affect mood, emotions and wellbeing. By inhaling essential oils you are inhaling the many compounds found in essential oils. These compounds are delivered to the olfactory bulb which is part of the brain’s limbic system also known as the emotional brain.

Odor stimuli in the limbic system then releases a series of brain chemicals. For example, a well-known calming essential oil, Lavender triggers the endorphin serotonin, which has a relaxing effect on the mind and body.

You might also choose to use essential oils for mood management because of their lack of side effects and they can be used safely without dependence. Never stop a prescription without discussing with your doctor first.

Essential oils are powerful and highly concentrated. You only need a small amount, a drop or two, to achieve fast, effective results. If applying topically I always recommend diluting with a vegetable oil like coconut oil. This lessens the chance of sensitivity as well as extends the benefits of the essential oils by reducing evaporation.
